Project Requirements
The building was converted to a Museum in the early 20th century. The layout of the building and lack of any space for special exhibitions was holding the museum back from realising its potential.  Support from the Heritage Lottery Fund offered the opportunity to secure the Museum's future with a major extension and refurbishment programme.

The Issue
The Trustees of the Museum wanted the highest quality of contemporary design to maximise the potential of the building and its site.  There was both substantial opposition to and strong support for the design and materials of the proposed extension.

The GL Hearn Solution
We worked closely with the Museum Director and Trustees and Eric Parry Architects to ensure we understood the scheme, which enabled us to act as an effective intermediary with both the local authority and English Heritage.  We guided the client through a complex planning process, as well as providing specialist inputs in relation to the scheme.  The Museum and Eric Parry's inspired scheme have achieved their objectives and the Museum re-opened with record visitor numbers and to consider acclaim.
