Len Newton

Len has worked out of the Sunderland office of GL Hearn since 1975. He specialises in the valuation for rating purposes in the out of town retail market including food superstores and supermarkets and large retail warehouses in the north of England.

Since becoming a Chartered Surveyor, Len has worked for both public and private sector clients. His experience ranges from landlord and tenant advisory, bank and building society valuations, compulsory purchase and compensation and commercial agency.

Since the 1990 Rating Revaluation, he became a dedicated rating surveyor and specialises in the out of town retail sector. Len has successfully attended a multitude of valuation tribunals on behalf of national and local clients, and in 2013, he was the lead expert witness in a number of MCC appeals to the Upper Tribunal (Lands Chamber) where substantial reductions in the rating assessments were determined and costs awarded against the Inland Revenue Valuation Office.

Being one of the senior members of the business rates team he offers advice and guidance to junior colleagues on negotiation skills and techniques to assist in their professional development as valuers.
