23 May 2016

On Friday 20 May 2016, over 12 thousand company employees across the UK went out into their communities volunteering their time to help community groups, schools and local charities. They took part in Give & Gain Day, the only global day of employee volunteering, organised by Business in the Community.

Over 240 companies helped hundreds of community organisations in the UK this year. In total, the time donated by business volunteers across the UK on Give & Gain Day will be 73,540 hours – an invaluable investment for communities. Projects involve everything from introducing school kids to sports and promoting healthy lifestyle, to employability workshops with the long term unemployed, and revitalising a community garden.

GL Hearn, now part of Capita Real Estate, is one of the few businesses that engages volunteers across a network of its offices in the UK that includes Manchester, Cheltenham, Bristol and London.

Stephen Howard, Chief Executive of Business in the Community said “Businesses are being increasingly strategic about volunteering as a way to not only make a difference but also to build skills and gain insight about their communities. Doing so will not only help attract the next generation of talent, but it will also create communities that are better places to live, work and do business.”

A range of organisations, from schools, and community groups benefitted from the time, expertise and skills of GL Hearn and Capita volunteers taking part in the initiative.

In Bristol the GL Hearn team supported the ‘Urban Food Trail’, part of the ‘Incredible Edible Bristol’, ‘Grow Bristol’ and ‘Bee the Change’ schemes. The aim is to inspire and educate – showing that food growing can be, and is, relevant in the urban landscape, as well as to provide free food for people and pollinators. GL Hearn volunteers planted vegetables, fruit, flowers, making compost bins and other gardening tasks.

In Cheltenham a team made up of 15 volunteers worked with The Milestone School in Gloucester, a school for children aged 3-16 with special needs. Volunteers tidied up their outside recreational areas, painting and general garden maintenance.

In Manchester 15 volunteers donated their time to the Debdale Eco Centre, one of the few eco centres in Manchester that focuses purely on organic food growing.

This group of volunteers also did the gardening including sifting compost and putting up raised beds, edging, pruning/cutting back and much more as it is a large site.

Last but no least, in London GL Hearn continued to support its long-term charity partner Providence Row and over 12 volunteers worked with charity staff on ‘Literalley’ the regeneration of a walkway near the charity buildings which includes the creation of a Tech community area.

Brian Sloggett, Executive Director for Capita Real Estate said: “GL Hearn, now part of Capita Real Estate, has supported Give and Gain for many years and it has become a cornerstone of our contribution to local communities. Our staff embrace the opportunity to donate time and as a business we do all we can to support as it promotes team working and fosters skills that we value enormously, especially as a newly expanded business, such as collaborative working and mentoring.” For more information about Give & Gain Day visit www.giveandgainday.org.uk or search #giveandgain on Twitter
