GL Hearn was pleased to sponsor a meeting organised by the International Property Tax Institute (IPTI) in London today to which a number of large companies which pay substantial amounts of business rates each year were invited.

The event was organised by the European Chapter of IPTI’s Corporate Advisory Committee and it provided an opportunity for those attending to be updated on the latest developments in business rates in the UK and property taxes elsewhere in Europe.

The main part of the meeting was devoted to a discussion of the extent to which the UK Government listens to the concerns of ratepayers. Companies are very concerned about the continued rise in business rates year on year, particularly during a period of recession when business rates in the UK are already amongst the highest local property taxes in the EU. Businesses also have concerns about the adverse impact of empty property rates and the postponement of the next revaluation of properties for rates from 2015 to 2017 which means that ratable values remain set at 2008 pre-recession levels of value for almost 10 years.

Paul Sanderson, President of IPTI, said: “Ratepayers in the UK have very serious concerns about the way in which the present business rates system operates and IPTI was pleased to be able to bring key players together to discuss these issues. Following the discussion today, we will be writing to Government to set out these concerns and hope that Ministers will take note and respond accordingly. IPTI was grateful to GL Hearn for kindly sponsoring this important event.”
