Nick is a Planning Director within the Development Group of GL Hearn and has advised on a wide range of planning and development consultancy related instructions and acted on behalf of a variety of private and public sector clients. His primary focus is retail/leisure/commercial mixed use development and investment across the UK. However, in response to the changing economic environment and client requirements, he is increasingly advising on residential as part of mixed use regeneration. Historically Nick has advised numerous Local Planning Authorities and the foodstore sector. He now focuses on developer and investor clients.

Nick’s work involves: strategic development advice; co-ordination of major planning applications; advising on retail and leisure led development strategies; formulation of policy advice; overseeing portfolio reviews and due diligence; asset management reviews and defensive planning advice; progressing mixed use redevelopment schemes and providing expert witness advice – Examinations in Public, Appeals and Call-ins.

Clients have included: Aberdeen Standard; British Airways Pension Fund; British Land; Edinburgh House Estates; Hammerson; Henry Boot Ltd; Jansons Property; LandSec; M&G Real Estate; NewRiver REIT; Princes Quays Estates; Reef Estates; Wykeland Group; and numerous Local Authorities.

Nick is an active member of Revo and Accessible Retail, and sits on the Revo Planning Workshop Group and BPF Planning Committee.

Recent success have included securing planning permission for:

  • Redevelopment of the Martlets Shopping Centre to provide 142 residential units (C3), a 10 screen cinema (D2), 63 bed hotel (C1), 14,500sqm of retail floorspace (A1) and a replacement library (D1). 
  • Regeneration of Cowley District Centre comprising: 225 residential units (C3) ranging from 4 to 15 storey; 71 bed hotel (C1); retail (A1/A3/A4) with associated parking; demolition of car parks and public house; extensive public realm and highways improvements
  • Approx. 90,000sqm of business space at a new business park adjoining Southend Airport. The scheme will be delivered in phases and provide “medi-tech” businesses and include a hotel and other ancillary functions including retail (Class A1 and A3).

Nick has also provided:

  • Asset management and defensive planning advice to a number of retail and leisure sector clients, many of which involved complex planning issues requiring PPAs, EIAs and often supporting Viability Assessments alongside appearances at EiPs
  • Strategic planning advice to a number of investor/developers on the regeneration of town centre assets and the delivery of mixed use redevelopment
