The new Airbus Wing Integration Centre (AWIC) building provides flexible ‘hangar’ space for aircraft component testing including a strong floor and wall for testing A320, A350 and A380 wings. The building also includes specialist laboratory space for material testing and development and office accommodation for 240 personnel.

The fit-out of the hangar included foundation strengthening and specialist fittings, crane installation and specialist services (hydraulics, chiller units, compressed air, electrical supplies, ventilation and dust extraction). Fit-out of the laboratories included specialist gases, laboratory equipment and close-controlled environments. The project also included the creation of two new junctions onto the A38, external works and landscaping.

Following handover, the project management team oversaw the transfer of over 400 pieces of equipment into the new facility ranging from heavy mechanical test machines to electron microscopes.

Funding support for the project was provided by the UK Government grant aid through the ATI (Aerospace Technology Institute).
