GL Hearn Major Projects team submit planning for New Park House, Manchester

23 November 2020

GL Hearn’s Major Projects team, working on behalf of Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust, has submitted a full planning application for a new 150-bed adult mental health inpatient unit. The proposal seeks to replace the existing Park House inpatient facility at North Manchester General Hospital.

The proposal is in direct response to existing and future healthcare needs in Manchester and the wider Greater Manchester area, and is a key part of the emerging masterplan for the hospital campus.

The replacement of the existing Park House inpatient mental health unit, which provides dormitory accommodation, with a new state of the art, fit for purpose facility is considered essential. This supports the Care Quality Commission (CQC) recommendation for the long-term replacement. The project will deliver significant benefits and form a key part of modernising mental health provisions in Greater Manchester, a priority within the regional healthcare strategy

"We are delighted to be working on a project of this calibre with Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust." said Laura Meyer, GL Hearn Major Projects Planning Director. "These exciting proposals will deliver a new state of the art mental health facility for the local area as well as form a key part of the wider hospital masterplan redevelopment."

Neil Thwaite, Chief Executive of Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust, said: “This is a real milestone in our journey to deliver better care for our patients. Subject to planning permission and the successful business case approvals, we could see work commence on site next year. With the current progress being made, we hope to have the facility operational by the end of 2023. We want people to experience our services in surroundings that are modern, safe and accessible. This investment signals our commitment to improve the facilities in which we provide care to our local population. It is excellent news for mental health services in Manchester and forms part of exciting regeneration plans being developed for the North Manchester hospital site.”
