GL Hearn's Major Project team secure planning permission for Whipps Cross Hospital redevelopment

09 June 2022

After receiving unanimous approval from London Borough of Waltham Forest Planning Committee in November, the GL Hearn Major Projects team are delighted to announce that the hospital redevelopment planning application has now been granted planning permission after stage 2 approval was received from the Mayor of London.

GL Hearn are instructed as planning advisors in relation to the two planning applications required to support Barts Health NHS Trust and their aspirations for the wider redevelopment of Whipps Cross Hospital. The Planning Committee approved two hybrid applications which between them will welcome a brand new, state-of the-art, 85,000sqm hospital, two multistorey car parks, a community health care building and up to 1,500 new homes with associated commercial, community and green space. The hospital will come forward as part of the government's New Hospital Programme and is an important milestone in bringing the trust’s vision to life.

The 18ha site in Leytonstone, East London, will be transformed to deliver a brand new hospital able to provide health care services at the cutting edge of healthcare provision, improving access to health, social care and wellbeing facilities and improving the lives of local people through the curation of a blended approach of complementary facilities including leisure, culture and wellbeing. The provision of 50% affordable housing as part of the 1,500 new homes will create a pioneering mixed-use campus accessible to all.

Laura Meyer, Planning Director at GL Hearn, said "It has been a real pleasure working on this truly innovative project which seeks to deliver the transformative redevelopment of a well established hospital site. We are delighted to have now gained planning permission for the hospital redevelopment proposals and look forward to continuing to help deliver the trust’s vision for the future of health and social care in East London."

Deborah Sinclair-Day, Barts Health NHS Trust said "the trust is extremely pleased to have secured this huge milestone for the development of the new hospital and wider site. GL Hearn have been instrumental in achieving this milestone. It will bring significant benefits to patients, staff, visitors, and the local community. We acknowledge there is still much to do but are very much looking forward to the next stage of the journey."

GL Hearn’s Economics team and Neighbourly Matters team have also provided advice in relation to the proposals.
